Protective mouth guards should be used by both children and adults who play contact sports such as football, soccer, basketball, boxing, and hockey. However, even those participating in noncontact sports (gymnastics, skateboarding, mountain biking, etc.) that could have risk of injury to the mouth would also benefit from wearing a mouth guard. Mouthguards can help limit the risk of injury to the soft tissues of the mouth, avoid chipped or broken teeth, nerve damage to teeth, or even tooth loss.
