Root canal treatment treats the nerve (pulp) of the tooth. There are several factors which contribute to the need for a root canal: trauma, gum disease, or physical irritation from deep decay, deep cracks, or very large fillings. Dr. Johnson will remove the pulp and replace it with a rubber sealant material. The tooth will then be covered with a protective crown which will reinforce the tooth against future fractures. Several years ago, diseased or infected teeth had to be removed. In most cases today, however, this is no longer true. We believe in saving teeth rather than removing them. We make every effort to help you keep your natural teeth for a lifetime.
